Payload and GVWR after bed accessories
Ford defines payload as gross vehicle weight rating minus base curb weight, and the door-jamb placard states it for that truck as built: "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed" a set number. Anything added later counts against that figure, including a cover, toolbox, rack, hitch, bull bar, passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight. Ford says to subtract added equipment from the label figure.
Reading the labels
Under 49 CFR 571.110, the Tire and Loading Information placard must state vehicle capacity weight as "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX pounds." The same rule defines vehicle capacity weight as rated cargo and luggage load plus 68 kilograms per designated seating position. The certification label under 49 CFR 567.4 shows GVWR in pounds and a GAWR for each axle, front to rear. GVWR may not be less than unloaded vehicle weight, rated cargo load and 150 pounds per seating position. Curb weight under 49 CFR 571.3 covers standard equipment with full fuel, oil and coolant, so aftermarket parts are not in it.
Ford's 2026 towing guide adds that base curb weight excludes passengers, cargo and optional equipment, that cargo weight includes tongue weight when towing, and that the load on each axle must never exceed its GAWR. Ford's support page places the label on the B-pillar or driver's door edge. SAE J2807 sets towing ratings for vehicles up to 14,000 lb GVWR; its public abstract does not define payload.
Maker payload ranges
| Maker document | Stated maximum payload | Maker condition |
|---|---|---|
| Ford, 2026 F-150 | 1,405 lb (3.5L EcoBoost H.O.) to 2,440 lb (3.5L EcoBoost) | Varies with accessories and configuration; see the doorjamb label |
| Ram, 2026 Ram 1500 | 1,490 lb (Hurricane H/O) to 2,360 lb (3.6L V6, Quad Cab 4x2), per its engine summaries | When properly equipped; trailer weight and payload ratings are mutually exclusive |
What accessories weigh
| Maker line | Stated weight | Also stated |
|---|---|---|
| Tyger T5 tri-fold alloy cover, 2024 to 2026 Tacoma, 5 ft bed | 48.99 lb | Even weight capacity up to 500 lb |
| DECKED Tool Box | 106 lb | 800 lb in the tub, 300 lb on the lid |
| DECKED Drawer System, full-size | 208 lb short bed; 233 lb standard and 8 ft | 2,000 lb evenly distributed; its FAQ says 200 to 230 lb |
| CURT Class IV hitch, SKU 14021, F-150 | No weight in pounds stated | 1,000 lb tongue weight rating; limited to the vehicle maker's stated capacities |
A load rating is not a weight. The Tyger cover supports up to 500 lb, but its own 48.99 lb comes off payload first. DECKED's pages do not say how system weight affects payload, so the arithmetic below is Ford's rule applied to DECKED's stated weights.
A worked subtraction
Take a placard that reads 1,500 lb, a figure chosen only for the arithmetic, and use the weights above. Add the Tyger cover and DECKED Tool Box: 48.99 + 106 = 154.99 lb, leaving 1,345.01 lb. Replace the toolbox with the 233 lb drawer system and the cover: 48.99 + 233 = 281.99 lb, leaving 1,218.01 lb. Then subtract the real weight of everyone aboard, cargo and tongue weight. Ram's brochure calculates conventional tongue weight at 10 percent of the trailer and states that tongue weight should never exceed the maker's limits, including payload and GAWR.
Axles matter too: a bull bar loads the front axle and tongue weight loads the rear, and each must stay within its GAWR on the certification label. The door-jamb sticker, owner's manual and hitch maker's labels govern. A rating shown here is the maker's published figure, not a guarantee for a specific truck.
