Hitch receiver sizes and adapter ratings

Receiver tubes come in 1.25 in, 2 in and 2.5 in openings. CURT puts Class I and II on 1.25 in, Class III, IV and Class V Xtra Duty on 2 in, and Class V Commercial Duty on 2.5 in. A reducer sleeve fits a smaller shank into a larger opening, and CURT limits its rating to the hitch. Draw-Tite states that its 2 in to 1.25 in adapter reduces the hitch rating by 50 percent.

Which class uses which opening

CURT's hitch class table lists the opening with the class limits. The class limit is a ceiling, not the rating of a given part. CURT's Class 3 hitch for the 2019 to 2026 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 (part 13393) lists 6,000 lb gross trailer weight and 600 lb tongue weight, below the class ceiling of 8,000 lb. Draw-Tite lists part 41954, a Class V hitch for the 2015 to 2026 F-150, with a 2 in receiver at 11,000 lb. Read the class definitions in hitch classes explained.

Why not stack adapters

CURT's extender guide says to abide by the lowest-rated component in the towing system, and says extenders and hitch adapters can reduce tongue weight capacity. None of the maker pages read here gives a combined rating for two parts stacked in one receiver, so no published figure exists to tow on. The one multi-sleeve product read is CURT's 45408 set, which the maker sells as a pair for 3 in to 2 in. Use one part, read its label, and size it against the tongue weight of the trailer.

The vehicle's door-jamb sticker, owner's manual and the hitch maker's labels govern. A rating shown here is the maker's published figure, not a guarantee for a specific truck.
