Drop-in and spray-in bed liners and tonneau cover clamping

A drop-in liner is a thermoformed plastic sheet that Penda lists at 0.19 to 0.2 inch thick; a spray-in liner is a coating that Rhino Linings says starts at 1/8 inch. Cover makers treat them differently at the bulkhead and rail. BAK swaps a 3/4 inch bulkhead seal for a 1/4 inch seal with a drop-in liner, and Retrax and Tyger give separate steps for over-the-rail liners.

What the liner changes

A liner adds thickness where the cover rail, clamp or bulkhead seal touch the bed, and some liners add a lip over the rail. Nissan's 2025 Frontier press kit shows the effect of a spray-in liner on bed size: a long bed measures 73.3 inches at the floor, or 72.7 with the spray-in liner, and 49.6 cubic feet becomes 49.2. Penda's FAQ says its liners can be altered during installation to work with accessories that include tonneau covers. Whether the liner covers the rail top decides the clamp question, so match the wording below to your liner.

How to read it

Three contact points recur: the bulkhead seal, the rail flange and the front corners. Seal and corner notes come up for drop-ins. Rail notes come up for liners or caps that cover the rail top, which is the split Tyger and Retrax draw between over-the-rail and under-the-rail liners. No cover maker we read gives a thickness limit for liners. Not sourced: Line-X, Dualliner and Armor/Duraliner statements about covers; Extang and Truxedo Sentry sheets.
